Bruins Fall in Montreal 4-2

The Bruins lost 3-2 to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night, in a heartbreaking finish. The Bruins were the better team for 50 minutes, but they couldn’t hold off a furious Montreal rally.

The B’s caught all of the breaks in this one. First off, they missed all world goalie Carey Price, who has been out for the last week with a lower body injury. They also the benefitted from a disallowed goal in the third period, after a successful coach’s challenge from Claude Julien.

Here’s what that looked like:

The refs decided that there was incidental contact when Brendan Gallagher interfered with Jonas Gustavsson inside the crease. Once that call was reversed, the Bruins were assured a victory. That is until Lars Eller tied the game with just over 11 minutes to go.

After a David Krejci penalty late in the game, David Desharnais put in the game winner, and the rest is history.

The B’s played about as well as they possibly could have. They basically led the entire game, but couldn’t shut down the Habs when it mattered the most. They got secondary scoring, including a goal from rookie Frank Vatrano who made his NHL debut. The Bruins brought their absolute best game to the Bell Centre, and led the best team in the league after two and a half periods, but couldn’t put the game away.

The good teams in the NHL almost always find a way to win when they dictate the pace of the game. They also find ways to win even when they aren’t at their best. On Saturday night a good team found a way to win.
